What it’s like

Bouldering for over-9s, with off-peak weekday sessions the cheapest way in and supervision rules to sort before you go.

This one's for the older kids, not the little ones. Nobody under 9 gets through the door, and anyone aged 9 to 17 needs an "Experienced Climber" alongside them, which for most families means an adult who actually climbs, not just someone to hold the coats. If that's not you, the non-climbing supervisor pays £5 to be in the building, which feels like a fair enough compromise given someone has to be responsible for a nine-year-old on a wall.

Once you're 14 to 17 and reasonably capable, there's a way round the constant supervision: a junior assessment on site, or a green card from their sister venue, The Climbing Works. Worth sorting early if you've got a keen young climber who wants to go back on their own terms rather than tethered to a parent every visit.

Cost depends entirely on timing. Off-peak is weekdays before 4pm at £8.50 full price or £7 concession, and peak covers weekday evenings and the whole weekend at £9.50 or £8. On top of entry there's a one-off £3 registration fee and £3 for shoe hire if you haven't got your own, so budget a bit more than the headline price for a first visit. They're open until 10pm on weekdays and 8pm at weekends, which gives you room for an after-school or after-work session.

It's card only, no cash, so don't turn up expecting to pay in coins for shoe hire. Parking is free but tight, just eight spaces plus two accessible ones, and Ashgate Road's on-street parking has restrictions, so the bus routes along Fullwood Road are a decent backup if the small car park's full.

Plan your visit

How old do kids need to be to climb here?

Nine is the minimum age, and everyone from 9 to 17 needs an experienced climber supervising them.

What if I can't climb myself, can I still bring my child?

You can come along as the supervisor, but if you're not climbing you pay £5 to be in the building.

How much does it cost?

£9.50 peak or £8.50 off-peak for full price, with concessions at £8 and £7. There's also a one-off £3 registration fee and £3 shoe hire if you need it.

When's off-peak?

Weekdays before 4pm. After 4pm on weekdays and all weekend counts as peak.

Can teenagers climb without an adult?

14 to 17 year olds can climb unsupervised once they've done a junior assessment on site or hold a green card from The Climbing Works.

Do we need to book ahead?

There's no booking link listed, so it looks like a straightforward turn-up-and-pay setup.

Is there parking?

Eight free spaces on site plus two accessible ones. Ashgate Road has on-street parking but with restrictions, so the bus stops on Fullwood Road are worth knowing about too.

Can we pay in cash?

No, it's card only across the board, including shoe hire.
