What it’s like
A residential activity centre where kids try caving, canoeing and climbing over a weekend rather than an afternoon.
This isn't a drop-in for an hour after lunch. Parson House works on stays, from a single night to a full weekend, and the activity list reads like an outdoor pursuits prospectus: bouldering, caving and pot holing, canoeing, rock scrambling, orienteering, an obstacle course. There's an indoor climbing wall too, so a rained-off morning doesn't mean a wasted one.
Ages start at 7, and the site is upfront that it's built for groups: school and youth parties get a 24-hour rate over two and a half days at £190, and there's a daily activity rate of £58 covering two activities, but that needs a minimum of ten people. If you're not part of a school or club, stag and hen groups get their own weekend packages, from £210 for a single day of activity up to £249 for two days.
You can also book accommodation on its own, at £39 a night or £78 for a weekend, which is handy if you've already got activities sorted elsewhere and just need beds. Bring your own bedding if you want to dodge the £8.50 charge for linen and a towel. Caving and weaselling won't suit every seven-year-old, mind, so it's worth thinking about how your child copes with tight, dark spaces before you commit a whole weekend to it.
Meals are included in some of the packages, and the centre says it's open to everyone, not just school groups: families, businesses, youth organisations, anyone wanting a weekend built around getting outside rather than sitting in front of a screen.

Plan your visit
How much does it cost?
It depends what you book. School groups pay £190 for a 24-hour rate over two and a half days, stag and hen weekends run £210 to £249, and accommodation alone is £39 a night.
Is it just for school groups?
No. The centre says it's open to families, friends, stag and hen groups and businesses as well as schools and youth organisations.
What age is it suitable for?
From 7 up, and there's no upper age limit listed, so it works for mixed-age groups and adults too.
What do kids actually do there?
Bouldering, canoeing, caving and pot holing, climbing and abseiling, orienteering, rock scrambling and an obstacle course. There's also an indoor climbing wall and a games room.
Is food included?
Some packages include meals, like the accommodation and meals weekend deal at £155. Accommodation-only bookings don't include food.
Do we need to bring bedding?
Bring your own if you can. Bed linen and a towel cost £8.50 per set per person if you need to hire them.
Can we just book a room without doing activities?
Accommodation-only rates are £39 a night or £78 for a weekend of two nights.
Is there a minimum group size?
The daily activity rate covering two activities at £58 needs a minimum of ten people, so it suits groups rather than a single family booking that option.
