What it’s like
A members' library in an old Nottingham townhouse, with a children's library and tours that let non-members peek inside.
This isn't a walk-in library. Bromley House works on membership, so day to day it's members and their families using the place, including a children's library with fiction and non-fiction for kids and young adults. If you're not a member, the way in is a guided tour or one of the literary and heritage events they run through the year, which are open to everyone.
For members, kids are properly welcome. School age children and grandchildren come under Individual and Joint Memberships, though under 16s need to be with an adult unless there's been prior arrangement and signed parental permission. There's a coffee room too, hot drinks are a pound, and if you bring your own food they'll even wash up your plates for you.
Worth knowing before you plan a visit: it's spread over three upper floors with no lift, so pushchairs and wheelchair users won't get far beyond the ground floor. If you fancy a proper look round without joining, you can book a short appointment, about fifteen minutes, where they'll show you the key rooms and talk through membership.
It's not a big day out in itself, more a curiosity to fold into a trip into town. A guided tour or a heritage event is the realistic option for a family that isn't already a member, and it's the kind of thing that suits older, more patient children better than a toddler who wants to run about.

Facilities
Plan your visit
Can we just turn up and visit?
Not really. Non-members get in via guided tours, events, or a pre-booked short appointment, not general walk-in access.
Can I bring my kids?
Yes, children are welcome and there's a children's library with fiction and non-fiction for kids and young adults. Under 16s need to be accompanied unless there's prior arrangement.
Is it accessible with a pushchair or wheelchair?
No. It's on three upper floors with no lift and several staircases, so it isn't accessible for wheelchair users.
What about food and drink?
There's a coffee room for members with teas, filter coffee and hot chocolate, all £1. You can bring your own food and they'll even do your washing up for you.
Do we need to book anything?
Events need booking because space is limited. If you want to look round without being a member, call ahead to arrange a short appointment.
