What it’s like

A big Edinburgh all-day dining spot with a proper kids menu, running from breakfast right into the evening.

This one's more about the eating than the entertaining. Brewhemia runs breakfast until noon, a boozy brunch window from 11 to 4, and all-day dining from midday to 10pm, with Sunday getting its own specials menu. There's a kids menu on the go too, so it's not just an afternoon tea spot for the grown ups while your seven-year-old picks at a side of chips.

The Scottish dishes and the afternoon tea options, including a Gentleman's and a Tipsy version, tell you this leans toward a smart sit-down meal rather than somewhere to let the kids loose. Group bookings and party rooms are available if you're planning something bigger, though they're clear that fancy dress and decorations aren't allowed, which is a bit of a faff if you had bunting in mind for a birthday.

Worth knowing before you turn up with the family in tow: under 18s are only allowed in until 10pm Sunday to Thursday, and under 21s until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, with a Challenge 25 policy and ID checks in force. On busy nights you might get seated across a couple of tables rather than all together, which is worth bearing in mind if you've got a toddler who needs to be within arm's reach.
