What it’s like

Indoor bouldering with walls, overhangs and a cave section, plus instructed sessions for climbers aged 7 to 15.

The whole point here is the climbing itself: vertical walls, overhangs, slabs, a roof and cave section, and a top-out boulder for anyone who fancies going higher. Problems are graded from very easy to very hard, so a first-timer and a confident 12-year-old can both be climbing at the same time on the same wall without either one getting bored or terrified. There's a minimum age of 7, and instructed sessions are run specifically for the 7-15 bracket, which is worth booking if your child hasn't climbed before.

Off-peak entry (before 4pm, Monday to Friday) is £9.75 for an adult and £8.25 concession, which includes youth aged 7-15. Peak times bump that up to £13 and £11. If you haven't got your own gear, climbing shoes are £3.90 to hire and chalk another £1.60, so factor that into the day. Pay-as-you-go visitors need to book ahead, especially at peak times; only monthly members and multipack holders can turn up without booking, which feels a bit backwards for a family trying it out once.

It's card only, no cash, and parking on site is limited, so at busy times you may end up parking on the road nearby. Portslade train station is a five-minute walk if you'd rather leave the car altogether. The on-site café does proper coffee and locally baked cakes, useful for the parent who's climbed themselves out after twenty minutes and wants to sit and watch instead.

One thing to flag: birthday parties aren't currently running here due to space restrictions, so this isn't the venue for that particular Saturday booking, even though everything else about it suits a group of climbing-mad kids.
