What it’s like

A woodland kindergarten near Brighton where kids build fires, whittle sticks and swing on ropes rather than sit at a desk.

This is not a nursery with a garden bolted on, it's a proper woodland setting where the outdoors is the whole point. Kids get stuck into mud kitchens, rope swings, fire-making and even bows and arrows, alongside natural crafts, games and stories. It suits babies right up to eight-year-olds, though the older end of that range will get more out of the fire skills and archery than the tiniest ones will.

Weather doesn't stop play here. They're open rain or shine, waterproofs are supplied as part of registration, and only proper extreme weather like storms or snow sends everyone off to an indoor backup venue. There's an Eco Shelter and a Longhouse for taking cover in lighter rain, which feels like a sensible middle ground rather than cancelling the whole day.

Toilets are camping-style, out in the woods, with a hand-washing station and a pop-up tent for nappy changes if your child's still in nappies. Safety is taken seriously for a setting built around risky play: high staff ratios, a gated and locked site, and bright uniforms so children are easy to spot. Intakes run in September and April, and they ask for a minimum of two days a week per child, so this reads more like a childcare commitment than a one-off day trip.

If you're on the waiting list, you'll get invited to a showaround before being offered a place, and siblings or families living within walking distance get priority. Worth factoring in if you're weighing this up against a more conventional nursery.

Plan your visit

What happens if it rains?

They stay open and waterproofs are provided as part of registration. Only extreme weather like storms, floods or snow sends them to a pre-approved indoor venue instead.

Where do the children go to the toilet?

There are camping-style toilets out in the woods and a hand-washing station with warm water and soap. Younger children still in nappies get changed in a small pop-up tent.

How do they keep the children safe in a woodland setting?

High staff to child ratios, a gated and locked site, and bright uniforms so children are easy to spot from a distance. Visits further into the woodland happen in smaller groups with signed-in, escorted visitors.

When can we join and is there a minimum commitment?

Intakes are in September and April, with a showaround offered before any place is confirmed. They ask for a minimum of two days a week per child, so this is a regular kindergarten place rather than a drop-in session.
