What it’s like
Hire your own beach hut for the day at Barry Island, with a climbing wall on the sand and free all-terrain wheelchairs for the beach.
You hire a beach hut for the whole day rather than lugging windbreaks and towels across the sand, and it changes the whole visit. Small huts and large huts are both on offer, so you can size up if you've got the full crew and a cool box to fit in. There's a climbing wall right there on the beach too, which is the bit that'll get mentioned on the way home more than the hut itself.
Prices jump a fair bit with the seasons. A small hut is £8 for the day in autumn and winter but £24 from April to October, and the large hut goes from £14.50 up to £42 in the same stretch. That summer price is real money for a day at the beach. Spring and summer opening runs 10am to 8pm, which gives you a proper long day if you want it.
Access has clearly been thought about here. There's a Changing Places facility with a hoist and height-adjustable washbasin, plus twelve accessible changing rooms under the eastern shelter, and free all-terrain beach wheelchairs you can book ahead to guarantee one's there when you arrive. Public toilets sit at both ends of the beach, by the huts on the eastern side and near Marco's Café to the west.
One thing to plan around if you're bringing a dog: they're not allowed on Whitmore Bay beach between the start of May and the end of September. Outside those months it's fine. The train station is a five minute walk from the beach, which makes this one of the easier coastal days out if you're not driving.

How much does a beach hut cost?
In spring and summer (April to October) it's £24 for a small hut and £42 for a large one, for the full day. Autumn and winter prices drop to £8 and £14.50.
Do we need to book a hut in advance?
There's no booking link listed, so it looks like it's arranged on the day, but do book ahead if you want a beach wheelchair to guarantee one's available.
Is there parking?
Yes, Barry Island Car Park overlooks the beach and Harbour Road. Coaches pay £50 per day at Nells Point.
Are dogs allowed on the beach?
Not on Whitmore Bay between 1st May and 30th September. Outside those months you're fine to bring one.
Is it accessible for wheelchair users?
There's a Changing Places facility with a hoist and accessible shower, plus free all-terrain beach wheelchairs designed not to sink into the sand. Book the beach wheelchair ahead to make sure one's free.
What can kids actually do there?
The beach hut gives you a base for the day, and there's a climbing wall right on the beach to keep them busy between paddles.
