What it’s like

A 25 metre main pool and a 12 metre learner pool, with lessons running from babies right up to adults.

There's a proper 25 metre pool for lengths and a 12 metre learner pool for the smaller ones who aren't ready for the deep end yet. Family swim sessions sit alongside more serious lane swimming, and the swimming lessons cover the whole range from baby and toddler classes through to adult learners. If you've got a toddler who just wants to splash and a nine-year-old who wants to swim proper lengths, the two pools mean you're not fighting over the same stretch of water.

The building itself is open long hours most of the week, from 7am to 10pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, a bit shorter on Tuesday at 7am to 9pm. Saturday is the odd one out, closing at 3:30pm, while Sunday runs 8am to 6pm. Worth checking which session you want against the timetable rather than just turning up and hoping.

Parking is free for the first two hours if you display a ticket, and blue badge holders get three hours free. Access looks properly thought through too: level access to the pools, a hoist and easy steps at poolside, a lowered reception desk and a lift to the upper floor, plus carers get in free. If you're coming by bus, several routes stop at the ASDA on High Street, a minute's walk from the door.

There's a café on site for the inevitable post-swim chips or hot chocolate, and lockers for your stuff while you're in the water. Birthday parties are on offer too, with members and Leisure Card holders getting a discount of up to 15% off the package.
