What it’s like

Wander among more than 35 real aircraft, from helicopters to gliders, with an outdoor play area and soft play to burn a rainy afternoon on.

This is a proper aircraft collection rather than a couple of planes propped up for show. Over 35 fixed wing and rotary aircraft fill the halls, and the interactive displays fill in the story of British Army aviation for anyone who wants more than just looking. Kids who like machines will find plenty to point at, and there's a monthly pre-school pilots session if you've got a younger one who needs something built for their age.

There's an outdoor play area you can use without paying for the museum at all, which is worth knowing if you just want a free stop with a coffee, plus indoor soft play for when the weather turns. The Apache Café runs until 3.30pm, with hot food until 2.30pm, so aim to eat before then rather than after.

Tickets sting a bit more if you turn up without booking. Adult entry online is £18.50 against £21.50 on the door, and a family of two adults and two kids goes from £51 online to £61 if you just show up. Booking ahead also gets you into a timed slot on busy days, and every ticket comes with a free annual pass, so a second visit within the year costs nothing.

Parking is free with an overflow field for busy days, and there are six accessible bays right by the front entrance. Wheelchairs and walkers are free to borrow if you need one, and carers get in free too. Only assistance dogs are allowed inside, though dogs are welcome out on the grounds and the café balcony.
