What it’s like

A working brickworks turned museum, with a Penny Arcade, a 3D tour and 125 years of brickmaking history to poke around in.

This one's about the buildings as much as anything in them. The site was a working brickworks and they've kept it looking that way, so you're walking through 125 years of brickmaking history rather than reading it off a wall. A guided tour takes 45 minutes to an hour, and then you're free to wander the rest at your own pace, which is worth building into your visit rather than treating as a bonus.

The Penny Arcade is the bit that'll stick in a kid's memory, and there's a 3D tour and some collections aimed at children too. Do bear in mind it's an old industrial building with uneven floors.

It opens Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, 11am to 4pm, with last entry at 3pm, so this isn't a spontaneous weekday-morning stop unless your week lines up. Adult tickets are £8, kids £6, and a family ticket for two adults and three children comes in at £23.50. Event days push those prices up a few pounds, which is fair enough given what's presumably laid on, but worth knowing before you plan around a normal admission price.

Parking is free and there's a decent amount of it, including Blue Badge spaces, and there's a café on site if the visit runs long. Dogs are welcome on a lead, which is a nice touch if a walk was already part of the day's plan.
