What it’s like
Weekly sailing, kayaking and campfires for ages 4 to 18, split by age group across the week.
This is a proper water-based scout troop, not just badges and biscuits. Kids get out on the water sailing, kayaking and canoeing, plus knot-tying, climbing, abseiling and the odd traditional campfire. There's camping and hiking too, and the site says every child gets at least one night away a year, with most camps held close to home so you're not driving hours to pick up a homesick eight-year-old.
The age groups are split properly. Squirrels takes the 4 to 6s on a Friday teatime, Beavers is 6 to 8 on Tuesdays, Cubs 8 to 10.5 on Thursdays, Scouts 10.5 to 14 on Mondays, and Explorers 14 to 18 on Friday evenings. That means your child moves up through the sections as they grow rather than ageing out of the whole thing at eleven.
Cost is £16 a month, paid by standing order on the 1st, with a sibling rate of £8 if you've got more than one going. That's a fair bit less than most kids' clubs once you work it out weekly, though it's a monthly commitment rather than a pay-as-you-go session. If you think your child might need you there for the first few weeks, they say to just have a word rather than assuming you can't stay.
They describe themselves as open to all and willing to adapt sessions so everyone can join in, which is worth knowing if you've got a child who needs a bit of extra thought put into how things run.
