What it’s like
A two-hour evening walk through Norwich's spookier corners, past the Cathedral, Castle and Elm Hill, best left to ages 10 and up.
You walk the streets after dark, not a museum, following one of a few routes that take in the Cathedral, the Castle, Elm Hill and the Quayside, with a guide doling out the ghost stories as you go. The Halloween Specials swap the streets for Cow Tower park, with spooky performers added to the mix, and that week runs from the 23rd to the 31st of October, skipping the 25th.
This isn't one for younger kids. The site itself says ages 10 and up, and leaves the final call to parents, but the material is genuinely morbid in places rather than jokey scary, so it's worth being honest with yourself about whether your nine-year-old will sleep that night. Two hours on your feet also asks a fair bit of a smaller child, especially with some cobbled stretches on the Castle Walk.
A weekly walk is £18 a head and runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.30 to 9.30pm, April through December. If you'd rather have the group to yourselves, private walks work out at £12 a person plus a flat £30 booking fee, with a £150 minimum, which suits a birthday do or a hen party better than a family of four. Booking ahead is essential either way, as numbers are capped.
Dogs on a lead are welcome, which is a nice touch for an evening stroll, and you meet by St Helen's Wharf car park, though the evening parking rate only kicks in after 6.30pm so arrive a touch early and you'll pay the daytime rate instead. The Castle Walk and the Halloween Specials in Cow Tower park are both wheelchair and mobility scooter accessible, but the regular Elm Hill and River routes aren't flagged that way, so check which walk you've actually booked.
