Nottingham's own offering here is more theatre than gallery. Lakeside Arts, out by the lake at the University of Nottingham, puts on family shows with puppetry, live music and storytelling, and there's a cafe and free parking if you're making a morning of it. For paintings and proper collections you'll need to head out of the city: a drive out to Leicester takes you to Leicester Museum & Art Gallery on New Walk, free to get into, with dinosaurs, Ancient Egypt and Leicester Stories (though some galleries are shut for redevelopment). Derby Museum and Art Gallery on The Strand is another free one, with the Joseph Wright gallery and a Coffee House for afterwards. If you're not fussed about paying, both Leicester and Derby are free and indoors, so they're an easy rainy-day choice, and Derby's listed for all ages. Leicester has lockers and a picnic area if you fancy bringing lunch. Lakeside suits families after a proper show rather than a wander round exhibits, and it's the one to book ahead for.
