Science & Discovery Centres in Newcastle
Newcastle does well for a rainy afternoon of proper discovery, and you do not need to pay a penny for either of the big two. The Great North Museum: Hancock sits right on Barras Bridge, free to get in, with dinosaurs and natural history halls that swallow up an hour or two without anyone noticing the weather outside. Down near Central Station, the Discovery Museum covers transport and has Tiny Tyneside, a dedicated area for under-5s, also free. Both are indoors and both are free, so the choice comes down to age and interest rather than budget. If you have a toddler in tow, Tiny Tyneside at Discovery Museum is built for them specifically. For older kids keen on skeletons and the natural world, the Hancock has the edge. Both have toilets and wheelchair access, and Discovery Museum can handle a birthday party if you fancy hosting one there.
