Climb the 164 steps of Grey's Monument on a guided tour with Newcastle City Guides, taking in views over Georgian Newcastle and hearing about Charles, 2nd Earl Grey, who the monument is named after. Tours usually run on the first and third Saturday of the month from April to September, with tickets sold for half-hour slots between 10am and 3.30pm and released at 9am two weeks before each tour date, so pre-booking is essential. Tickets cost £7 per person and season tickets aren't valid for this tour. Children under 5 aren't admitted, and those aged 5-16 must be accompanied by an adult and pre-booked. Each slot is limited to eight people, and you'll need to arrive no later than five minutes before your booking time as late arrivals can't be guaranteed entry. The staircase is narrow and dark in places, so it's not suitable for anyone with a fear of heights or confined spaces, breathing difficulties, a heart condition, or in the later stages of pregnancy. Tours can be cancelled at short notice due to severe weather or poor visibility.
