Caves, Mines & Underground in York

York itself doesn't have a proper cave or mine to explore, but The Bloody Tour of York gets you underground in spirit, leading you through the city's snickleways on a 90-minute walk of torture, execution and ghost stories, from £7.50. For the real thing, you're looking at a longer trip out to Wakefield, where the National Coal Mining Museum takes you 140 metres down an old colliery shaft on a guided trip, free to get in. If you want proper depth, the coal mine's your best bet, and it's free, with parking and a cafe on site too. Fancy something further still, there's Ponden Kirk & Fairy Cave out at Keighley, a free crevice cave on the moors above Haworth with Brontë links, though it's outdoor and exposed so dress for it. For a puzzle rather than a hole in the ground, Houdini's Escape Room in Leeds locks your team in for an hour, ages 2 to 18, but book ahead as it's card only.
