Caves, Mines & Underground in Plymouth
Not much underground on Plymouth's own doorstep, but two proper caves make it worth a longer trip out. Out at Buckfastleigh, the William Pengelly Cave Studies Trust runs guided walks into a real cave where you can see bones from animals that lived up to 120,000 years ago, best suited to ages 5 and up. A drive out to Liskeard gets you Carnglaze Caverns, old slate workings with an underground lake and a woodland river walk above ground once you're back in the daylight. If your children are younger, Carnglaze is the gentler option, with free parking, a cafe and picnic spots if you want to make a day of it, and it's wheelchair and blue badge accessible too, though you'll need to book ahead. Pengelly is the one for older children who like a proper explore and don't mind a scramble, and it comes with a small gift shop on the way out. Both are some way out of the city, so plan for the drive either way.
