YMCA Weston Community Library
WHERE
Southampton
What it’s like
A small community library with baby groups, craft sessions, a toy library and a stay-and-play morning for under-fives.
This is a proper community library rather than a big central one, and that's what makes it work for the under-school-age crowd. Story and Rhyme Time and the Little Foxes Stay and Play session give babies and toddlers something to actually do rather than just tag along while you browse, and there's a toy library alongside the usual book borrowing and reservations if you want to try something out before you commit to buying it.
Craft sessions run for the kids too, and on Thursdays the knitting and crochet club takes over, which is a nice one if you've got an older child who fancies learning a skill rather than another screen-based hobby. There's wifi, toilets and a café on site, so a morning session can easily turn into a longer visit without anyone getting restless over the lack of a coffee.
Opening hours are limited: Monday and Thursday 10am to 4:30pm, Wednesday until 5pm, and that's it for the week. There's no booking link listed, so the sensible approach is to just turn up for the regular sessions and see how it goes.
