What it’s like

Ten pin bowling, pool and arcade games on a lane in Manchester, with pizza delivered straight to you, though kids have to be out by 7pm.

This is a proper bowling alley setup rather than a soft play with a couple of lanes bolted on. Ten pin bowling is the main event, but there's pool tables, darts, Guitar Hero and an arcade NBA Hoops machine to fill the gaps between frames, which is handy when someone's had three gutter balls in a row and needs cheering up.

The catch, and it's a big one for families, is that kids are only allowed in until 7pm. Given the venue stays open until midnight most nights, and past 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, that curfew tells you this is really an evening spot for adults that opens its doors to families earlier in the day. On Saturdays doors open at 12pm and Sundays at 12pm too, so the daytime window is your best bet, and they say hours start earlier still in school holidays, which is worth grabbing if you can get there.

Food comes from Nell's Pizza, NYC-style, and it gets brought straight to your lane, so there's no queuing at a counter while your kids melt down over whose turn it is next. A game works out at £9.50 a head, which adds up fast for a family of four playing a couple of games each. You can walk in or book, so if you fancy a Saturday lunchtime session there's no need to plan weeks ahead, though turning up on spec on a Friday evening feels like the wrong end of the day to bring the kids anyway.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

£9.50 a game per person, so two games each for a family of four is well over £70.

Do we need to book ahead?

No, you can walk in, or book a lane if you'd rather have it sorted in advance.

Can kids come in the evening?

Only until 7pm. After that it shifts to an adults crowd, especially on Friday and Saturday nights when it runs on until the early hours.

What are the opening hours for a family visit?

Saturday and Sunday both open from midday, which gives you the longest daytime stretch. Weekdays it's from 4pm, and school holidays it opens earlier still.

Is there food?

Nell's Pizza does NYC-style pizza and it comes straight to your lane, so nobody has to leave the game to fetch it.
