What it’s like

Wander the farm tracks to see rescued horses and ponies, then have a go at grooming one.

This is a working rescue farm rather than a petting zoo, so the main thing to do is walk the tracks around the fields and see the horses and ponies World Horse Welfare looks after. There's a meet the ponies tour if you want it steered a bit, and in summer there's an activity quiz to keep children looking rather than just wandering past.

The groom a pony session is the one to save for the end of the visit. It's hands-on rather than hands-off, which makes a nice change from the usual look-but-don't-touch farm visit, and it's the bit a child will talk about on the way home.

It's only open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, 11am to 3pm, and booking is required, so this isn't a turn-up-on-a-whim sort of trip. The coffee shop runs a bit later, till 4pm, with drinks, snacks and homemade cakes, and you can book afternoon tea if you want to make more of the day. The site's wheelchair accessible and dogs are welcome on the walk round.

Birthday parties are worth knowing about too. One option gets you a tour, lunch and a groom a pony session for up to 12 children, and there's a smaller afternoon tea version with grooming for up to 6, so it scales depending on how big a party you're planning.

Plan your visit

Do we need to book ahead?

Yes, booking is required for a visit rather than just turning up.

What are the opening hours?

Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, 11am to 3pm. The coffee shop stays open a bit longer, until 4pm.

Can children get hands-on with the ponies?

There's a groom a pony session as well as a meet the ponies tour, so it's not just watching from behind a fence.

Is there anywhere to eat?

A coffee shop does drinks, snacks and homemade cakes, and afternoon tea is available if you book it in advance.

Can we do a birthday party here?

There are two options: a tour, lunch and grooming session for up to 12 children, or a smaller afternoon tea and grooming version for up to 6.
