What it’s like
Pick a mug, plate or novelty animal from over 250 ceramic shapes and paint it while the kiln does the hard bit later.
You turn up, choose from more than 250 ceramic pieces, mugs, plates, bowls, vases, novelty animals, and get stuck into painting. There's a £5 studio fee per painter on top of whatever you pick, so a simple coaster starting at £8 is one of the cheaper ways in if you're just testing the water. Coasters and plaques double up as a nice one for keeping a baby's hand or footprint, if that's the sort of keepsake you're after.
Bookings run in two-hour slots, which is enough time for most kids to actually finish something rather than abandon a half-painted vase halfway through. It suits the 5 to 15 bracket best, old enough to sit still and commit to a design. Weekends and school holidays get booked up, and walk-ins aren't guaranteed, so it's worth sorting a slot rather than just turning up and hoping.
Birthday parties are catered for at £18.50 a child, which includes the studio fee, a piece to paint, and a commemorative plate everyone signs for the birthday child. You can add a buffet for £8.50 a head. One thing to flag: you don't get the studio to yourselves for a party, other painters will be working away at their own tables too, which is fine for some groups and a bit much for others.
There's a tearoom on site doing homemade cakes and drinks, free parking right outside, and the building's wheelchair accessible with its own accessible toilet. It's not a huge production of a day out, more a couple of focused hours with something to show for it at the end.
