What it’s like
A free hands-on museum of everyday objects from the past, with weekly craft and reminiscence sessions.
This one's built around ordinary things: old household objects, everyday bits and pieces you'd have found in a house decades back, and kids get to actually handle them rather than peer through glass. There's a weekly reminiscence session too, with crafts and creative activities tied in, which is a nice way to get a chat going about how things used to be done.
It's free to get in, which makes it an easy one to slot into a day out without watching the clock or the spend. Hours are shorter than you might expect though, 10.30 to 4 on weekdays and 11 to 4 at weekends, so this isn't a long lazy afternoon visit, more a focused hour or so before you head off to do something else.
It's based at Ocean Terminal, so parking is free and sorted for you, and if you're coming by tram or bus there are several routes that stop right at Ocean Terminal. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters are available free from reception there too, which is a handy detail if you've got a relative who struggles with distances, on top of the museum itself being wheelchair accessible.
There's no booking system mentioned, so you can just turn up within opening hours. Toilets are on site, which always matters more than people admit when you've got small kids in tow.
