What it’s like

Old fire engines and hands-on displays on Scottish firefighting history, free to get in.

This is a proper old-fashioned museum in the best way: historic fire engines you can get up close to, and interactive displays that walk through the story of firefighting in Scotland. There's an 18-stop audio tour on a free digital guide if you want to go at your own pace, and they run hands-on family activities and creative workshops too, which is where younger visitors tend to perk up rather than just looking at things behind glass.

Nobody's booking a slot for this one. You just turn up, and the volunteer Gallery Attendants will show you round and chat if you fancy it, tailored to what you're interested in rather than a fixed script. Free entry is the obvious win here, and with a lift to every floor and buggies welcome throughout, it's an easy one to wheel round without any faff.

Budget up to two hours, which feels about right for the amount on show without dragging. There's no café or picnic spot inside, so eat before or after, there are places nearby if you time it right. Dogs are a bit of an issue: only assistance dogs are allowed in, so if you've got the family pet with you, this isn't the stop to make with them in tow, and there's nowhere sensible outside to leave them either.

Parking's metered street parking on Dryden Terrace and McDonald Road rather than anything on site, so build in a few extra minutes to find a spot and feed the meter before you head in.

How long should we plan for?

Most people spend up to two hours, tour and exhibits included.

Can we bring the dog?

Assistance dogs only, pets and emotional support animals aren't allowed inside and there's nowhere outside to leave them either.
