WHERE
Amble
What it’s like
A wide, open stretch of sand near Amble for beach games, sunbathing and a go at surfing with a local school.
Sand, space and not much else, which is rather the point. There's room for rounders, sandcastles, a kickabout or just lying down with a book while the kids dig a hole to Australia. Northside Surf School runs lessons here too, so if you've got a nine-year-old who's decided this is the summer they learn to surf, this is where you'd bring them.
It's free to get in and open all day, every day, which takes the pressure off. There's no session to catch and no ticket to book, so a grey Tuesday afternoon works just as well as a sunny Saturday. Bring your own everything though, since there's no food on site, so pack a picnic and plenty of water if you're staying more than an hour or two.
Parking is free for 100 cars, but it's 500m from the beach itself, which is fine for most people but worth knowing if you've got a buggy full of bags and a toddler who won't walk. Dogs are allowed, so it works for a family walk with the dog as much as it does for a proper beach day. There's a toilet on site, including an accessible one, which isn't a given at every stretch of coast like this.
The beach itself does the work here. It's not built up, there's no arcade or café to duck into if the weather turns, just sand, sea and whatever games you bring with you.
