What it’s like

Strap into a VR headset and race real cars on real circuits, with races sold as single sprints or full grand prix sessions.

This is racing, not soft play with a headset on. Kids pick from over 185 cars, Formula 1 through to road cars and track cars, and race them round more than 85 circuits, all in VR. Each race is ten minutes, and they run in blocks of three, so there's proper time to compare notes between laps rather than one quick go and out.

It suits the 10 to 15 bracket the site sets, which makes sense once you think about it: this needs a kid old enough to sit through a briefing and actually follow a race line, not one who wants to press buttons randomly. A single Sprint at £17.50 gets you a taster in about half an hour. Go for the Double Sprint at £32.50 for an hour, or push to a Grand Prix session, which runs 90 minutes to two and a half hours and costs £37.50 midweek or £42.50 at the weekend. There's also Unlimited Racing at £39.50 if your kid wants to keep going without watching the clock.

The opening hours are the one to check twice before you plan around this. It's shut Tuesday to Thursday, open weekday afternoons from 2pm, and only really open all day on Saturday and Sunday. Booking's required, not optional, so this isn't a turn-up-and-see visit.

Birthday parties run Sunday to Thursday, up to 13 kids for £295, and include three of the ten-minute races as the main event. At that price for a party you'd want the birthday kid genuinely into racing games rather than along for the cake.
