What it’s like

A hillside farm where toddlers pet baby animals, ride tractors and barrels, and have a go on the go-karts.

This is a proper hands-on farm day: petting sessions happen daily, and there's a Baby Barn where the youngest animals live, which tends to be the bit that gets photographed most. You buy food to feed the animals yourself, and there are barrel rides for the two-plus crowd, tractor rides, and both pedal and coin-operated go-karts if your child's past the animal-stroking stage and wants to move.

There's indoor soft play and outdoor play parks too, so a rainy morning doesn't wreck the whole visit. The farm sits on a hill, and while they say the slopes are "nothing too bad", it's worth knowing if you're pushing a buggy or a wheelchair up them, though ramps into the buildings and an accessible tractor ride are there to help.

Entry isn't cheap for a farm visit: £10.95 for a child and £11.95 for an adult, though the family ticket at £42 softens that if there are two adults and two kids. Under twos go free. Booking is mandatory at weekends and school holidays, and it's online only, no phone bookings, so don't leave it to a phone call on the morning.

Opening hours shift through the year, generally 10am to 4pm outside the summer stretch and 10am to 5pm from April to October. The farm closes in January altogether, and December runs different Christmas Grotto hours, so that month needs a bit more checking before you set off. There's a tearoom and snack bar on site for food and drinks through the day, and dogs aren't allowed in, for the animals' sake.
