What it’s like
Free woodland walks with a musical shelter to bang about on and the odd campfire or egg-rolling day thrown in.
The path winds through the trees to a Musical Forest shelter, a proper draw for anyone under ten, with percussion instruments built in so you can stop and make a racket without annoying the neighbours. Beyond that it's straightforward woodland walking, paths being built out for buggies, so it should get easier for pushchairs as time goes on.
The calendar has some good reasons to time your visit deliberately. Campfire days bring nature learning and hands-on activities, and there's an egg rolling family day too, both the kind of thing worth building a walk around rather than just hoping to stumble on. Entry is free, which makes it an easy one to add to a weekend without any spend beyond a flask and something for the picnic.
The catch is getting there. There's no parking at the woodland itself and none on the road up from the Glencorse Centre either.70. It's a fair trek if you're used to driving straight up to a car park, but it does mean the woodland stays quiet once you're in it.
There are toilets on site and picnics are allowed, so once you've made the journey you can settle in for a good stretch of the day rather than rushing back for the loo.
