What it’s like
A small military history museum in York with tanks, battle honours and regimental artefacts spanning 1685 to now.
Inside you'll find the story of a cavalry regiment told through the actual kit: M4 Sherman tanks, DD tanks (the ones that could swim ashore on D-Day, which is the sort of fact that sticks with a ten-year-old), plus battle honours and regimental regalia going back to 1685. It is a proper museum rather than a hands-on attraction, so it suits a child who likes looking closely and asking questions more than one who needs buttons to press.
Entry is £5 for adults and £2.50 for children aged 5 to 16, and one child gets in free with every paying adult, which softens the cost if you have got more than one kid in tow. Students and the over-60s pay £4. Serving Service personnel go half price and Regiment members are free, both nice touches if either applies to you.
It is fully wheelchair accessible, with adapted toilets and a stairlift between the foyer and the museum floor for one wheelchair user at a time. Parking is not on site but Clifford's Tower car park is a minute's walk away and St George's Field a few minutes more, both pay and display, and it is about fifteen minutes on foot from York station if you fancy the walk instead.
Hours are shorter than a lot of York's big attractions, Tuesday to Friday 9.30 to 4.30 and weekends 10 to 4. Given the subject matter and the lack of interactive stuff, it probably works best as a shorter stop bolted onto a day of other things in York rather than the main event for younger children.
