What it’s like

A guided night walk round York's haunted spots, starting at 8pm and taking about 75 to 90 minutes on foot.

You meet outside the Kings Arms by the river as it gets dark, then follow a guide through York's old streets and alleys hearing the stories behind the city's reputation for hauntings. It runs every night of the year bar Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so it's an easy one to slot into a weekend away without much planning beyond turning up on time.

Expect to be out for 75 to 90 minutes, finishing up near the Minster around 9.20pm depending on your guide and the weather. It's all outdoors and there's no shelter if it rains, so this isn't one to bail on for a bit of drizzle. Bring a coat rather than hope for the best.

At £10 for an adult and £6 for a child or student, it's a fair price for an evening that fills the gap between dinner and bed on a city break. Card only on the night, no cash, which catches a few people out. The route has some dark patches and uneven footpaths, so keep a hand free for little ones and watch your footing.

Dogs are welcome to come along, and if you access the meeting point via King Street it's fully accessible for wheelchairs. The nearest train station is about a 15 minute walk from the meeting place, worth factoring in if you're coming straight off a train with tired legs already.
