What it’s like

A free Gothic Revival building to wander with a zen garden, a café and a nave that looks nothing like a normal day out.

This is a Grade II* listed building that used to be a monastery, and the pull for kids is just how strange and grand it feels compared to the usual soft play or farm park. They wander through the rooms, poke about the zen garden, and stand under the Great Nave, which is the bit that'll actually stick in their heads. There are free hourly meditation sessions running daily from 12 to 1pm too, if you fancy testing whether a six-year-old can sit still for ten minutes.

Entry is free, which is rare for somewhere this grand, and that alone makes it worth an hour of your Sunday. The Welcome Café does sandwiches, cakes and healthy snacks, and you can eat inside or take it out to the gardens if the weather's playing along. It's fully accessible for wheelchairs and buggies, with baby change and accessible toilets on site, and there's free parking so you're not hunting for change on top of everything else.

The catch is the opening hours. It only opens Sunday to Thursday, 10am to 4pm, because Friday and Saturday are given over to weddings and private events. So this isn't a weekend fallback if the rain's set in on a Saturday, it's more of a term-time midweek or Sunday outing. Guided tours need pre-booking if you want one, and the nave occasionally closes for its own private events, so it's not guaranteed to be open exactly as you picture it every visit.

It's about ten minutes' drive from Manchester city centre, or a short train to Ashburys Station and a ten-minute walk, with buses 205 and 53 stopping right outside. Given the free entry and the accessibility, it's an easy one to fold into a slower day with young children or a buggy, without much planning needed beyond checking which day you're going.
