What it’s like

Art courses, a drama class for 4 to 7s and family films, all inside a bookable community hall in Abbots Langley.

The kids' bit here is the art course: six sessions spread across the year, and the site puts it at £50 per child for the course or £200 if you take the whole year. Work out which is better value before you commit, because the yearly price only stings if your six-year-old is still keen in February. There's also a drama class for 4 to 7s run by Perform on Thursdays, which is the youngest thing on the programme.

Everything else is a mixed bag you pick from rather than a place you wander round. Family productions turn up in the theatre programme, Hub Cinema runs film screenings, and there's an art exhibition programme that's free to look at. So it's really four or five different things under one roof, and which one you book depends on your kid.

The Hall itself is hired by the hour: £40 for the Main Hall, £20 for Elvira's coffee shop, £10 for the meeting room, half an hour minimum each. That's the awkward bit if you just want a quick slot, and the meeting room is up one and a half flights of stairs with no lift, so it's no good with a buggy or a wheelchair. The Main Hall and the café both have disabled access. Parking is free but it's a short walk away rather than on site, which is worth knowing with a four-year-old who's decided not to walk.

Food is Elvira's coffee shop: coffee, homemade cake, the usual refreshments. Good for a sit-down after a class, and handy if you're waiting out someone else's session. Afternoon Tea lands on the third Wednesday of the month and Quiz & Fizz on the last Thursday, both grown-up draws rather than kid ones.

Plan your visit

How much is the kids' art course?

£50 per child per course, or £200 if you book the whole year of six courses. Check which one you're actually getting before you pay.

What's the drama class?

Perform runs it on Thursdays for 4 to 7s. It's the youngest session on the programme.

Do we need to book?

The hall and rooms are booked in advance, with half an hour as the minimum slot. You can do it online or with the booking form.

How much is it to hire a room?

£40 an hour for the Main Hall, £20 for Elvira's coffee shop, £10 for the meeting room. Half an hour is the shortest booking they'll take.

Can I get a wheelchair or buggy to the meeting room?

No, it's up one and a half flights of stairs and there's no lift. The Main Hall and the café do have disabled access.

Where do we park?

Free long-stay car park a short walk away, postcode WD5 0AW. Nothing on site, so leave a few minutes with kids in tow.

Is there food?

Elvira's coffee shop does coffee, homemade cake and refreshments. It's the obvious stop after a class.

What else is on for families?

Family productions in the theatre programme, Hub Cinema screenings, and the art exhibition programme. It varies through the year, so it's worth seeing what's on before you pick a day.

Can we do a birthday party here?

They run a fixed-price children's party package that uses the Main Hall for three hours. Book it in advance like any other hall hire.

Anything for adults?

Sound baths at £25 a session, adult art courses at £150, and a community craft and textile group. Quiz & Fizz is the last Thursday of the month, Afternoon Tea the third Wednesday.

What ages is the art course for?

The kids' courses sit in the 4 to 7 bracket, so they're the right fit for reception to Year 2 and a bit young for anyone older.

Is it somewhere you can just turn up to?

The exhibition programme is free to look at, but the rooms and courses are booked slots. Check what's running before you set off.
