What it’s like

Two galleries of 300 years of military history, a shooting simulator to test steady hands, and a ticket that gets you back in free all year.

The main pull here is the shooting simulator, and it's the sort of thing that'll get mentioned in the car on the way home. Beyond that there are two galleries covering over 300 years of military history, plus a virtual museum and a Bloomberg Digital Guide if your kids like poking at screens as much as reading labels. It's a proper museum rather than a soft play with history bolted on, so it suits kids who can handle looking at things and reading a bit, more than toddlers who need something to climb.

Admission is £2.95 for a child, £4.95 for an adult, or £12.95 for a family ticket, and that gets you an annual pass so you can come back free for a full year. That's the smart way to do it if you've got a wriggly one who might only manage an hour on the first visit. Last entry is an hour before closing, so don't turn up at ten to five on a weekday expecting a proper look round.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm, with no Sunday opening listed and the museum closed on Bank Holidays, which catches people out when they're planning a long weekend. There's a café on site for when the history gets too much and everyone needs a sit down and a biscuit.

Getting there is easy without a car. It's a one minute walk from the bus and tram station in Bury centre, and the East Lancashire Railway is nearby too. If you do drive, there's street parking outside plus spaces at Bury Interchange and Q Park, and a pay and display car park close by.
