What it’s like
Free entry to watch a collection of working mill steam engines turning over, some driven by real steam.
This is a museum built around one thing: big old mill engines, kept in working order and demonstrated in front of you. On Wednesdays and Sundays they run them under electric motor drive, and on the handful of steam days through the year (August, October and December weekends), you get them properly under steam, which is the version worth timing your visit around.
There is no admission charge, which is rare for anything with this much machinery on show. Regular demonstration days run 11am to 3pm, while the steam days stretch to 10am to 4pm, giving you more time to see several engines through a full cycle rather than catching one mid-turn.
It's a site for kids who like watching big mechanical things work rather than pressing buttons themselves, so it suits a curious seven-year-old more naturally than a toddler who wants something to climb on. Parking is free on the Morrison's car park nearby, which takes one cost worry off the day entirely.
