What it’s like
A townhouse gallery of Impressionist paintings where under-18s get in free and a phone doubles as the guidebook.
This is proper art on the walls, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Manet, hung in a grand old building just off the Strand. Kids under 18 get in free, which makes it an easy one to slot into a London day without the whole ticket bill landing on you. There's a free guide on Bloomberg Connects you can pull up on your own phone, so you're not stuck queuing for an audio handset or lugging a leaflet round.
It suits a child who can walk round a gallery and look rather than touch, so this is one for older kids who'll cope with quiet rooms and glass cases rather than toddlers wanting to run at things. Beyond the permanent collection there are smaller temporary displays included in the ticket, though the bigger exhibitions cost extra on top, worth factoring in if you fancy seeing everything on show that day.
Adult tickets are £16 on the door or £14 if you book online, which is the obvious one to do since it saves you a couple of quid for two minutes on a screen. Students, teachers and Museums Association members get their own lower rates too. Last entry is 17:15, so a late afternoon dash after school pickup is cutting it fine.
The café does pastries and hot drinks without needing a booking, handy if the little art critic in your group needs a biscuit break halfway round. One thing to know before you go: it's cashless throughout, so leave the coin jar at home. And if you're planning to buy anything from the shop, bring your own bag, they don't hand out carrier bags there.
