The British Engineerium
WHERE
Hove
What it’s like
A Victorian engineering hall in Hove where you walk through a coal tunnel and pump room, but you'll need to book ahead.
This isn't a wander-in museum. You book a visit to see a preserved Victorian engineering building, and the main draw is underground: a coal tunnel where you can view the old boilers, plus the pump room with its machinery still in place. It's a proper bit of industrial history rather than a hands-on kids' museum, so it suits older children who'll get a kick out of real Victorian engineering rather than a toddler looking for something to touch.
The building itself is part of the appeal and part of the catch. It's ground floor accessible, with an accessible toilet down there too, but the first floor is stairs only, so a buggy or wheelchair means you're seeing half the story. There's a ramp into the dance studio, which also has its own accessible toilet, if that's part of your visit.
Parking on site is limited, though blue badge holders get designated bays. Your best bet is the free parking around Hove Park for up to three hours. If you're coming by public transport, it's a twenty minute walk from Hove Station, or you can get a bus to Old Shoreham Road and walk ten minutes, or Neville Road and walk five.
Because this is a historic building rather than a purpose-built attraction, don't expect lifts or wide-open galleries. What you get instead is the genuine article: a working coal tunnel and pump room that have survived more or less as they were.
