What it’s like

A children's bookshop with a pirate ship to climb into, story times and author events, plus a little café for coffee while they browse.

There's a pirate ship built into the shop for kids to clamber into while you browse the shelves, which is a nice touch when most bookshops just want you to keep small hands off the stock. Regular story times run alongside author events, workshops and craft sessions, so it's worth treating this as somewhere you plan a visit around rather than just drop into on a whim.

The author events look like the real draw. Signings such as the Tom Gates one come with a ticket and book bundle at £12.99, and Liz will only sign copies bought there on the day, so don't turn up with one from elsewhere expecting an autograph. Booking is required for these and it's done by email rather than through a ticketing site, and they ask you to say how many children and adults are coming.

If you're just after a book, prices are normal shop prices, a picture book like Lots by Nicola Davies is £7.99, and staff will order in anything currently in print if it's not on the shelf, with free delivery around Brighton and Hove. The Little Nook Café does coffee, tea, hot chocolate and cold drinks.

There's a baby change if you've got a little one in tow, and a gift shop alongside the books for presents that aren't just another paperback.

Plan your visit

Do we need to book for author events?

Yes, they ask you to email booknookevents@booknookuk.com with the event name and how many children and adults are coming.

Can we get books signed?

Only if you've bought the book at The Book Nook itself, Liz doesn't have time to sign copies bought elsewhere.

What does an event cost?

The Tom Gates signing event, book included, was £12.99. Regular books are priced as normal, like £7.99 for a picture book.

Is there anywhere to eat or drink?

The Little Nook Café does coffee, teas, hot chocolate and cold drinks.

What if we can't make an event we've booked?

Let them know as soon as you can so someone else on a waiting list can take the spot.

Can you get a book that isn't in stock?

They'll order in anything currently in print, children's or adult's, with free delivery in Brighton and Hove.
