What it’s like
Free gallery of photography and lens-based art in the Merchant City, open Tuesday to Sunday with no ticket to book.
This is a gallery rather than a hands-on activity centre, so what you're doing is walking round exhibitions of photography and lens-based art with your kids and talking about what you see. It suits a child who'll happily look and chat rather than one who needs buttons to press, so gauge your own crowd before you go. There's no charge to get in, which makes it an easy hour to slot into a wider day in town rather than a whole outing on its own.
It's open Tuesday to Sunday, 12pm to 5pm, and there's no booking system to wrestle with, you just turn up. Worth knowing that it does close for a few days between exhibitions every couple of months, so a wasted trip is possible if the timing's unlucky. The building's wheelchair accessible and there's a gift shop if the kids want a small souvenir on the way out.
Parking is a short walk rather than on the doorstep, with car parks on Albion Street, King Street and Glassford Street nearby. If you're coming by public transport, St Enoch subway station is the closest stop and there are buses too, which probably makes more sense than trying to park right outside in the Merchant City.
