WHERE

Kenilworth

What it’s like

A guided hour inside a historic abbey house, then parkland walks to wear the kids out afterwards.

The house itself is the bit worth the extra money. You can't just wander round it on your own, you have to go on a guided tour, which runs on the hour at 11, 12 and 2 without booking ahead. That's an hour indoors, so you'll want the parkland afterwards to let the kids stretch their legs properly, and the Repton Walks are there for that, though they lock up at 4pm on a Thursday which catches some people out.

Grounds entry alone is £8 for an adult and £2 for a child, which gets you the tearoom and the walking routes. Add the house tour and it jumps to £16 and £5.50, doubling the adult price for that one hour indoors. There's an annual family pass at £55 for two adults and two children if you think you'll be back.

It's closed Fridays and Saturdays for private events, which is an odd one to plan round if weekends are your only free days. Picnics aren't allowed on the grounds, so food means the Vaulted Hall Tearoom, and you'll need a grounds ticket to get in there anyway. Parking's free on site, and there's baby changing in the tearoom toilets.

Last admission is 4pm and they open 10 to 5, Sunday to Thursday. Tours can't be booked in advance, so if you want one, turn up in good time and ask, though calling ahead to check availability is what they suggest.
