What it’s like

Climb a reconstructed Roman gate, explore the granary and try a battle drill in the only known gyrus inside a Roman fort.

This is a reconstructed Roman fort you actually get to climb over rather than just look at from behind a rope. Kids can get up on the imposing gate, poke round the granary building, and stand in the gyrus, which the site says is the only one known inside a Roman fort anywhere. There's Roman soldier training and battle drill laid on, plus a go at making a Roman clay pot to take home.

Entry is £4.63 for adults and £3.83 for children, carers and students, which feels fair for what's a proper hands-on history site rather than a museum you shuffle round. The catch is that you can't just turn up: pre-booking is required for every visit so they can manage how many people are in the fort at once, and it only opens on select school holiday dates. Worth sorting before you plan the rest of the day around it.

It's an outdoor site, so a wet forecast is worth factoring in, and there's free parking if you're driving. The fort shuts from early December and normally reopens after February half term, so this is very much a spring-to-autumn plan.

Birthday parties here go big on the theme: the Legends of Rome package gets you costumed Roman soldiers, a battle drill in the gyrus and clay pot making, for up to 20 children over two hours. It's self-catering, so you're bringing your own food and cake, but at £200 for 20 kids it's a proper themed party rather than a generic soft play booking.
