What it’s like
A concert hall doing family workshops on Saturdays and free lunchtime recitals by young musicians on weekdays.
This one's a proper concert hall rather than a soft play or a farm, so what you're getting is Saturday family performance workshops where kids get stuck into activities alongside a live show, plus Chetham's Lunchtime Concerts, free weekday afternoon recitals put on by young musicians. The family sessions are £8 a child with one adult going in free, which is fair enough for a couple of hours of proper music-making rather than a soft play romp.
It suits a wide age bracket on paper, nought to eighteen, but the site itself flags that pre-schoolers aren't really recommended for some of the classical concerts or the louder amplified events. So the free lunchtime recitals or the Saturday family sessions are the safer bet if you've got a toddler in tow, rather than booking into a full evening concert and hoping for the best.
Getting there is easy if you're on the train, Manchester Victoria is literally opposite, a two minute walk, with the Metrolink stop just as close. If you're driving, the nearby car parks do discounts with an advance code, which softens the blow a bit. There's a hearing loop and step-free access throughout, and the Atrium Bar opens an hour before evening shows for a drink and a snack if you're stopping on.
Everyone needs a ticket regardless of age, even babies, though under-twos can go in free on a babes-in-arms ticket sat on your lap. Booking's essential, and you can only buy up to six tickets online in one go, so a bigger group means phoning or emailing the box office directly.
