What it’s like

A theatre with proper family touches sorted, from pram storage to relaxed performances for anxious first-timers.

This is one for families who want the theatre bit done properly rather than as an afterthought. There's level access throughout, booster seats if your child needs the extra height to see over the row in front, and baby changing facilities so a nappy emergency doesn't mean missing the second half. Pram storage is there too, which matters more than you'd think when you've lugged a buggy across town only to be told to fold it up and hold it on your lap.

The relaxed performances are the detail worth knowing about if theatre trips usually come with a side of anxiety. They're open to anyone, not just those with a specific diagnosis, and the whole point is to take the pressure off so nobody's shushing your child for shuffling about. Audio described performances run too, for families who need that.

Food-wise, the Café Bar does a family lunch package on selected family performances, so it's worth timing your visit around one of those if a sit-down meal matters to you as much as the show does.

Parking's a bit of a squeeze if you're not badge-holders. There are only two accessible bays right by the building, so most people will end up at the Leeds Markets NCP car park a five minute walk away, open from 7am to 11pm daily. If you're coming by train, it's about a fifteen minute walk from Leeds City Station, and the bus and coach station is only two to five minutes across the road, which is the easier option with small legs in tow.
