What it’s like
Free ruins to clamber round on the edge of Cowbridge, with steep old steps that make it feel like a proper explore.
This is a ruined medieval castle you can wander into for nothing, sat just outside Cowbridge with a small car park right at the entrance. There's an upper and lower level to poke around, and it's the kind of ruin where you're genuinely walking through old stonework rather than looking at it behind a rope.
That said, it's not a place to let kids run off on their own. The site itself flags steep, uneven steps and a real risk of falls from height, plus wild plants and flowers that might be poisonous. If you've got a toddler who wants to touch everything and climb everything, you'll be doing a lot of hand-holding here rather than sitting on a bench with a coffee.
It's open 10am to 4pm, with last admission half an hour before closing, so it's a morning or early afternoon visit rather than a lazy sundown wander. Dogs are welcome on short leads on the ground floor levels, which is handy if a walk round the castle is part of a bigger dog walk that day. The lanes around the site are narrow, so take it slowly on the drive in.
There's no booking needed and no charge, which makes it an easy add-on to a day in Cowbridge rather than a destination you'd plan a whole day around. Bring proper shoes for the steps and keep a close eye on anyone small near the edges.
