What it’s like

Free entry to 50 rebuilt historic buildings, woodland and parkland to wander, though parking will cost you £7.

Fifty original buildings, moved brick by brick from all over Wales and rebuilt here, make up the museum itself, but this listing is about the car park you'll actually be pulling into. It's £7 a day by cash or card, free if you've got a blue badge or you've come on a motorbike, and there's a season ticket for £45 if you know you'll be back. Cardiff Bus route 32 stops right in the car park too, so driving isn't the only way in.

Once you're parked up, the site is the draw: interactive galleries, hands-on activities, and traditional festivals with music and dance running through the year. There's beech woodland and parkland to explore as well, which is a decent way to stretch a visit if the historic buildings have started to blur into one after the third cottage. Entry to the museum itself is free, though some exhibitions and events do carry a charge.

Worth knowing before you set off with a buggy: pushchairs are only allowed into three of the buildings, Oakdale Institute, St Teilo's Church and Gwalia Stores, so you'll be folding it up or leaving someone outside for the rest. The site has uneven floors and steep paths in places, being an outdoor historic site rather than a flat modern attraction. Manual wheelchairs are free from the welcome desk on a first-come-first-served basis, and there's a buggy service you can book if you call at least two weeks ahead.

Under-16s need an adult with them at all times, and there are bag searches on entry. If you want it quiet, weekday afternoons after 3pm in term time are the tip from the museum itself, since weekends and bank holidays get properly busy.
