What it’s like
A free, sprawling park with a story trail, a champion tree hunt and a carved animal wall to spot along the way.
There's no single big attraction here, which is either the point or the drawback depending on how your kids like their days out. Instead you've got a Story Trail to follow, a woodland balance trail for wobbling along logs, and a Champion Tree Trail that marks out the park's oldest and biggest specimens if you fancy turning a walk into a bit of a quest. The Animal Wall, with its carved stone creatures, is the one detail kids tend to remember and ask about afterwards, so it's worth building the route around.
It's free to get in and open from half seven in the morning to half six at night, every day, which makes it an easy one to drop into for an hour or stretch into most of a day. There's no booking involved, you just turn up. The natural play features and open ground mean it works well for toddlers who want to potter as much as older kids who want to run the trails properly.
Food-wise you're spoiled for choice with three cafés dotted around: Brodies on the Wall, the Secret Garden Café and the Summerhouse Café, all leaning towards independent and locally sourced rather than the usual park kiosk fare. If you've got a dog with you it's well looked after too, with water bowls and treats out year round and dog ice creams in summer.
The catch is parking, or the lack of it on site. You're relying on pay and display bays nearby at Castle Mews, North Road, College Road, King Edward VII Avenue or Museum Avenue. If you're coming by train, the West Gate entrance is about ten minutes from Cardiff Central and there's also a water bus stop at the southern end near Cardiff Bridge if you want to arrive by river.
