WHERE

Sheringham

What it’s like

Pantomimes, plays, youth theatre and free creative sessions in a proper old theatre right in Sheringham.

This is a working theatre, not a museum piece, and the programme shows it: amateur and professional productions, musicals, pantomimes, plus live screenings of opera and ballet on the days there isn't a show on stage. The Youth Theatre does its own productions too, with things like The Addams Family Junior giving younger performers a proper stage to work on.

There are free creative sessions running alongside the shows, covering creative writing, crafts, yoga and relaxation, so a trip here does not have to mean sitting still in the dark for two hours. That's worth knowing if you've got a child who fidgets through a matinee but comes alive with a paintbrush in hand.

The Hub Café keeps sensible hours, open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 3pm, and does scones, cakes, sandwiches and the usual teas and coffees. You cannot bring your own food or drink into the theatre itself, so grab something there beforehand or plan a proper meal round the visit instead. Parking is a short walk away on Morris Street, pay and display through the day but free once it hits 6pm, handy if you're coming for an evening show.

It's wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet on site, and the whole place feels built for popping in and out of rather than a one-off special occasion trip.
