What it’s like
Hand-building or wheel-throwing classes where you make actual tableware, not just paint a plain mug.
This one's proper pottery, not a paint-your-own-mug session. You're either shaping clay by hand or having a go on the wheel, and a taster class runs 2 to 2.5 hours, which is enough time to actually finish something rather than just get the feel for it. There's also a 2-day wheel throwing workshop if you want to go deeper, running 10am to 4pm each day, though at £220 that's a proper commitment rather than a rainy Tuesday filler.
The taster classes sit at £54 for hand-building and throwing combined, or £57 for throwing only, so this isn't the cheapest craft afternoon out there. What you don't get is your pot on the day. Finished pieces need firing and glazing, and the site says 3 to 6 weeks before you collect, which is a long wait when a kid's asked every day since the class whether their bowl's ready yet. Collection is Monday to Thursday, 5 to 9pm, once they've emailed to say it's done.
If you've got a bigger group, private classes start from £40 a head for hand-building and they'll take groups from 4 up to 32 or more, which makes it a decent option for a birthday party where you want everyone doing something rather than watching a magician. There's also a hen party option from £33.33 a head plus VAT, in case you're planning something a bit different.
It's about 10 minutes on foot from Manchester Piccadilly, following Fairfield Street and the railway arches, so if you're coming in by train it's a straightforward walk. Street parking is around North Western Street, Union Street and a few other nearby roads, and there's apparently space right in front of the studio shutters if you're driving over instead.
