What it’s like

Free visit to a Victorian waterworks building with two giant beam engines you can see running on Steam Days.

Two 100 horsepower beam engines sit inside a Grade II* listed Victorian waterworks building from 1868, and on Steam and Event Days you get to watch them actually working. That's the bit worth timing your visit around. The engines are the whole point of coming, and seeing them still moving after all this time is a different experience to reading about them in a glass case somewhere.

Regular Sunday opening runs from Easter through to the end of December, but only in the afternoon, 2pm to 5pm. Steam and Event Days run longer, 11am to 4pm, so if you want the engines in motion rather than standing quietly, those are the days to pick. Entry's free either way, which makes it an easy one to add to a weekend without worrying about the cost.

Parking's free on site, so there's no faff there, and well behaved dogs on a lead are welcome too if you're bringing the dog along with the kids. The building itself is old and industrial rather than built for wandering, so this suits kids who'll get a kick out of huge Victorian machinery rather than ones after climbing frames and soft play.

There's no booking system mentioned.
