WHAT IT’S LIKE

A big free-to-enter park near West Bridgford with a lake, a great play area with a 14-element tower, a skatepark and 4X bike track, easily fills a whole day.

Rushcliffe Country Park sits on the site of a former WWII munitions factory and opened in 1993, now grown into a mature park with a lake, woodland and grassland. Kids have plenty to do: a large play area with a Kanope Tower multi-play unit (14 different play elements), a pendulum pod swing and a fully inclusive wheelchair see-saw, plus a skatepark for skateboards, BMXs and scooters, a 4X cycle track in the woodland, free outdoor exercise equipment, two free table tennis tables, and a permanent orienteering course (maps from the visitor centre). Families can also follow volunteer-made interactive trails (sheets 50p from the visitor centre) or pick up bird seed for 50p. It suits toddlers up to teens given the mix of play area, skatepark and trails. Practically: access to the park itself is free, but the car park costs £1.50 for up to 3 hours and £3 for over 3 hours (8am–6pm), with annual parking passes available online for regulars. Paths around the lake are flat and buggy/wheelchair-friendly, with just minor slopes elsewhere, and there's a Changing Places toilet in the visitor centre plus a RADAR key scheme for several gates. For food there's the Coffee and Cake by the Lake takeaway café (10am–4pm daily, seasonal variation) and Tree Top Catering by the play area for drinks, ice cream and takeaway food, or bring a picnic to the benches and tables (no BBQs allowed). Parkrun runs free every Saturday at 9am and Junior Parkrun every Sunday at 9am (advance registration needed), and there's a monthly Wildlife Watch group for 8-13 year olds. The visitor centre (8am–4pm daily) has an interactive touchscreen history of the park and wildlife info, and there's a bookable conference room for up to 30 people.
