What it’s like
Free museum where kids can design their own medal and pore over real uniforms and memorabilia.
This one's built around the hands-on stuff rather than glass cases you're not allowed near. The medal design activity is the bit that'll stick, and there's a proper collection of uniforms and memorabilia to go with it, so a curious eight-year-old could easily fill an hour poking about.
It's free, which makes it an easy add to a Glasgow day rather than the main event, especially given the hours are tight. Tuesday to Friday it's open 10 till 3.30, with last entry at 3pm, and a handful of Saturdays through the year on top of that. Check which Saturday before you plan around it, because it's not every week.
There's no parking on site, so you're looking at on-street parking nearby or the multi-storey on Elmbank Street, both of which cost. Charing Cross station is a five minute walk, which is probably the easier way in if you're coming without a car and juggling kids. The ground floor is wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet, though the upper floors aren't guaranteed to be, and staff are there to help if you need it.
Given the short opening window, this is one for the morning or straight after lunch rather than a last-minute stop before you head home.
