What it’s like

A free walled garden in Stanmer Park to wander with themed areas, a Halloween trail in October, and a counter-service café for cake afterwards.

There's no entry charge here, which is rare enough for a garden this size to make it worth flagging straight away. You wander a walled garden broken into themed areas, including the Canada Garden and the All Seasons Garden, at whatever pace suits a small child who wants to stop and look at everything twice. It runs 9:30am to 5pm through spring and summer, though last entry and café last orders are 4:30pm, so don't arrive at ten to five expecting to get in.

The paths are level and step-free throughout, with firm surfaces and gravel that make it genuinely manageable with a buggy or a wheelchair, and there are two wheelchairs to borrow from the Market if you need them on the day. Benches are dotted around, which matters more than it sounds once you've got a toddler who's decided walking is over for the day.

Come October half-term there's a Halloween Trail with spooky clues to follow, which is the obvious one to time your visit around if the kids are at the age for a gentle scare. The café is counter-service, does coffee and cakes from its own bakery plus hot and cold lunch items, and there are hot food pop-ups at weekends and bank holidays.

Parking is in Stanmer Park itself, and it's worth knowing the machines take card only, no cash, with Patchway car park the closest to the garden. If you're coming by bus, the 78 stops a couple of minutes from Stanmer Village, which beats the fifteen-minute walk from the other routes.
